Antique Scallop Edge Plate
An antique handmade plate with a scalloped edge and buttermilk-hue glaze, that is typical of Pugliese pottery. Dating back to the late 1800s, the simple yet elegant design is common to Grottaglie, a town in southern Puglia famed for its age-old ceramic craft. The ivory pottery known as ‘robba bianca’ represents the finest kind of ‘ceramica rustica’, produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired, and is the most expensive of this rural ceramic. Thus these pieces were very valuable and precious to a family, being used for many years, well looked after and repaired if damaged (never discarded). Traditionally this plate would have been in daily use at meal times, with the family eating off the same plate - beginning with the father and ending with the children. Today the hand thrown plate would make a lovely addition to a kitchen bench or table setting, adding some country charm, especially when pared with the matching plates as seen in the images.
Found in Martina Franca
the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known for its baroque architecture.
Dimensions: H5.5cm x W29cm x D29cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
