Vintage hand thrown terracotta pot with an intact lid and an iridescent maroon glaze. This old technique of marble glazing is common to Grottaglie, a town in Puglia renowned for its age old ceramic craft. Dating back to the mid-1900s, this kind of pottery is called a ‘vasettu smarmriatu cu lu cuperchiu’ in local dialect. Originally the terracotta jar was used for preserving foods in olive oil, such as artichokes, eggplants, peppers or salted anchovies. What makes this piece extra special are the splashes of green glaze on the lid’s surface. Today, this unique vessel would be ideal for storage, used as a vase for fresh flowers, or simply decorative.

Found in Lecce

the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H20cm x W15cm x D15cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
