Small Antique Hand Painted Plate
An antique hand painted plate with a design characteristic of plates and bowls from southern Italy, more specifically associated with the ‘sponge-ware’ ceramics of Caltagirone, Sicily. This smaller sized plate dates back to the late 1800s and features three hand painted blue dots at its centre (most likely representing a flower), encircled by a decorative sponge-effect design in a chocolatey brown. This brown design which commonly decorated the outer edge of plates and bowls, was often created using a potato skin dabbed onto the ceramic piece to achieve this sponge-like effect. The charming, farmhouse-style piece has a robust quality synonymous with domestic pottery of the region, with its rustic patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. The antique plate is the perfect piece to inject some country charm to any kitchen or table setting, especially when pared with the matching plates as seen in the images.
Found in Lecce
