Small Antique Hand Painted 'Righe & Stelle' Plate
This hand painted plate is typical of Pugliese domestic pottery. Dating back to the early 1900s, the charming blue floral design or ‘righe & stelle’ pattern around the edge is characteristic of the town of Grottaglie - known for its age old ceramic craft. The hand thrown piece would have been in use at family mealtimes up until the mid 1900s. The old clay pottery from Puglia, like this plate, is thick and robust, and has a lovely handmade, rustic feel. The well loved plate with its buttermilk glaze, although in perfect condition, shows its characteristic signs of age with a wonderful patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. The small antique side plate would make a lovely addition to the kitchen, or table setting. Also available are matching righe & stelle ceramic plates and bowls in various sizes to create a charming tablescape, as seen in the images.
