Small Vintage Twisted Handle Amphora

€120.00
Sold

A vintage hand-thrown amphora with a beautifully formed body and twisted handles that are a fluid extension of the spout. This charming piece has a raw surface texture and patina from daily use, with the mustard-hue glaze on the top handles and spout. Traditionally used for wine or water, it would have been tied to a tree to keep it fresh for farmers working the land on those long, hot summer days. The mustard glaze on top was used for hygiene purposes to wipe clean, rather than simply decorative. Just visible are the markings of perhaps the original owner, which has been etched out. Add some farmhouse charm to your home or space, and create an impactful display, especially when pared with the matching (larger) amphora as seen in the images.

Found in Lecce

the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H25cm x W20cm x D20cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
