Vintage Constellation and Zodiac Print by Andreas Cellarius
This vintage print of the coloured engraved celestial map, with constellations and signs of the zodiac, is part of the Harmonica Macrocosmica by Cellarius. This high quality mid-century lithograph of the famous Dutch series, has finite detail and vivid colours. First published by Janssonius in 1660, it consists of 29 double plates made in sumptuous baroque style. The first part describes cosmological theories, as well as illustrates motions of the sun and planets that were discovered by Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe. The last eight plates, which this particular print belongs to, depict constellations of both celestial hemispheres and planispheres. Cellarius' charts are the most sought after of celestial charts, blending the striking imagery of the golden age of Dutch Cartography with contemporary scientific knowledge. The print has been professionally framed in a wooden frame with a matte black finish and a plexiglass front, it also features a brass hook at the back ready for mounting. This unique work would make a beautiful addition to any space, especially when combined with Cellarius’s matching framed prints of celestial charts to complete the set (as seen in images).
