Vintage 'R. Mongelli 1961' Yeast Pot

€160.00
Sold

A charming hand thrown pot, signed ‘R. Mongelli’ and dated November 1961, originating from Grottaglie. These pots with their unique splatter effect pattern were primarily used in Puglia and southern Italy for keeping the mother yeast in a domestic kitchen. The spotted glaze technique recalls the ancient tradition of ‘smammriato’ - where artisans, in order to conceal defects from enamelling, dripped an additional colour on the surface using small branches, especially bunches of thyme or from olive trees as a brush. Today the vintage pot would be ideal as a storage vessel, vase or as decorative display piece to inject colour into any home or space.

Found in Lecce

the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H22cm x W22cm x D22cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
