XL Antique Hand Painted 'Righe & Stelle' Plate
This extra-large hand painted serving plate is typical of Pugliese ceramics. Dating back to the early 1900s, the charming blue floral design or ‘righe & stelle’ pattern around the edge set against the buttermilk glaze, is characteristic of the town of Grottaglie - known for its age old ceramic craft. The old terracotta pottery from Puglia, like this plate, is thick and robust, and has a lovely handmade, rustic feel. The well loved piece, although in perfect condition, shows its characteristic signs of age with a wonderful patina. It was used for domestic use up until the mid 1900s, and specifically to serve a family during meal times, where they would eat off the same plate beginning with the father and ending with the children. The antique platter would make a lovely addition to the kitchen, as decorative display or a great centrepiece on a table for fruit, especially when teamed with the matching plates and bowls as seen in the images.
