XL Antique 'Righe & Stelle' Jug

€220.00

An antique hand-thrown jug with the hand painted floral motif that is a symbol of the Puglia region, known as ‘righe e stelle’. The design is particular to Grottaglie, a town famed for its age-old ceramic craft, where circles are combined to create rosettes or star formations. Since the 1800s the flowers were made with stencils, originally cut from sponges. Wine and water jugs from Puglia usually have the most extensive decorations and this one dates back to the mid 1800s. The charming piece with its well-loved patina and pinched spout features the floral motif across the body and stripes in inky blue across the rim, set against a buttermilk glaze. Today, this extra large jug would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers or as a decorative display piece adding some country charm to any home or space. Create an impactful display with matching farmhouse ceramics as seen in the images.
