XL Antique Turquoise Rim Plate
A charming antique platter that is typical of Pugliese ceramics, with a minimalism that renders it quite ‘modern’ in design. What makes this piece rare and unique is the hand painted rim in a turquoise blue colour (usually applied in an inky blue). Dating back to the 1800s, the XL platter features metal staples on the back, as seen in the images. Before the availability of adhesives, pottery was repaired using this traditional method. These domestic pieces of pottery were considered valuable pieces to the family, and would be repaired rather than thrown away. The old farmhouse pottery from Puglia, like this large platter, is thick and robust, and has a lovely handmade, rustic feel. Primarily used to serve a family during meal times, where they would have eaten off the same plate beginning with the father and ending with the children. The antique plate shows signs of its years of use and has developed a wonderful patina over time. This XL piece would make a lovely addition to the kitchen or table setting, adding some country charm.
Found in Ostuni
the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).
Dimensions: H6-7cm x W39cm x D39cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
