XL Antique Twisted Handle Amphora

Sold

This large antique amphora with its sculptural form, impressive scale and beautiful forest green glaze, was originally used to hold wine for farmers working the land. The thick robust clay would keep its contents fresh and cool in the long, hot summer months. The wine flask par excellence originates from the Pugliese town of Grottaglie and is called a ‘cuccu’ in local dialect. Dating back to the 1700s, it is a particularly rare example of this type of farmhouse pottery. It features a spectacular glaze and twisted handles typical of ceramics from this southern region of Puglia. The striking amphora has that perfectly imperfect patina, which can only be brought about authentically from years of daily use. The large, hand-thrown piece would make a beautiful display piece adding that rustic charm to any home or space, and it also available in a mustard yellow glaze option (which is not as old as this example).

Found in Alessano

the charming small Salento town home to some magnificent noble palazzi and important families who resided in and around the town.

Dimensions: H45cm x W24cm x D24cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
