XL Antique Yeast Pot with Lid
This large, handmade pot with its unique splatter effect pattern was primarily used in Puglia and southern Italy for keeping the mother yeast in a domestic kitchen. The spotted glaze technique recalls the ancient tradition of ‘smammriato’ - where artisans, in order to conceal defects from enamelling, dripped an additional colour on the surface using small branches, especially bunches of thyme or from olive trees as a brush. This wonderfully unique technique means each piece is one of a kind. This unusually large historic example dating back to the late 1800s is a rare find due to its extra-large size and coming with its original, intact lid. Today the antique yeast pot would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers or as decorative display piece to inject colour into any home or space.
Found in Ostuni
the enchanting hill top town of the valle d’Itria known as ‘la città bianca’ (or white city).
Dimensions: H35cm x W26cm x D26cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
